Ian Swain is a retired teacher from Yorkshire, whose father and grandfather were in the building trade. He has always had a keen interest in DIY. Having been widowed with relatively young children, he and his family decided to explore the Outer Hebrides for the first time in 2007, having spent his life looking across to the islands from the mainland and wondering what is out there. Since that first visit, Ian and his children Heather and Christopher, have fallen in love with the area, Christopher now even living in Stornoway.

In 2014, with retirement on the horizon, Ian bought Tigh na Boireach, which was already running as a holiday let. All three of the family were involved in developing the garden and field, to give the outside space features unique to the property.

In 2017 Airidh an Dobhrain caught Ian’s eye on the property market. It was a bigger project than Tigh na Boireach, and Ian bought it to renovate when he retired the following year. Again the whole family were involved and quite major changes were undertaken to equip it with modern features and comforts, as well as opening up two new windows to give the rooms a light spacious feel.

Heather used her artistic skills to choose the colour schemes, which reflect the colours found on the local beaches and the sea and has made the felted pictures which are on the walls (most of which are available for sale), whilst Christopher has designed and constructed sheds at both Tigh na Boireach and Airidh an Dobhrain. It is very much a family business and we aim to give guests a relaxing enjoyable holiday in a very special place.
